SMART Indigenous Youth (SIY)

SMART Indigenous Youth embeds a land-based, culturally responsive, digital health initiative into school curricula to promote active living and mental wellness among Indigenous youth (13-18 years) in rural and remote regions in Canada.

Using the SMART Platform, this 5-year community trial involves embedding a culturally and geographically appropriate land-based program into the school curricula in collaboration with school administrators, Elders, and community leaders.

This program was developed and is being implemented in collaboration with Indigenous school administrators, Elders, and community leaders in Saskatchewan, Canada. As citizen scientists in this initiative, youth interact with researchers in real-time using smartphones to share their perceptions on a range of social and health behaviours, as well as smartphone-based sensor data, to evaluate school-based intervention.
